Buncrana Gorse Fire - 08 April 2013

In the early hours of this morning (Monday 8th April 2013, Buncrana Fire Brigade were battling to control a giant gorse fire on Fahan Hill in Buncrana, Donegal. Photographer Adam Rory Porter said the fire was approximately 1.5 kilometres away from his house in this picture.

Donegal County Fire and Rescue Service says it believes many of the gorse and forest fires it has attended in the past week may have been started deliberately.

Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), Ireland: St Patrick's Day 2013

There were some incredible Aurora displays over north and northwestern parts of Ireland on Sunday night as a result of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) on Sunday morning.

The solar blast led to amazing Northern Lights displays on St Patrick's night.

Irish Seismometers Record North Korea Nuclear Test

<!--[if gte mso 9]>

The energy from today's (Tuesday, 12 February 2013) underground nuclear test in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) was felt as far away as Ireland and recorded on seismometers in Dublin and Donegal, according to the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN).

The seismometers picked up the "explosion-like" event approximately 11 minutes after North Korea detonated what it called a “miniaturised” nuclear device.

Tom Blake, INSN Director explained that the explosion from the nuclear test propagated through the ground measuring 4.9 magnitude on the Richter Scale.

Mr. Blake, who is also Head of the National Data Centre, Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation at the School of Cosmic Physics in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), explained: “The energy wave generated by North Korea’s nuclear test was clearly picked up by seismometers in north Donegal and the Dublin Mountains approximately 11 minutes after it occurred at 2:58 AM (GMT) on Tuesday.  It was located roughly in the region of the previous North Korean nuclear tests of 2006 and 2009. The South Korean defence ministry has provided preliminary yield estimates for the test of between 6 to 7 kilotons. Our data suggests the test was a more powerful blast than North Korea's two previous tests.”

Mr. Blake said that seismometers are so sensitive that they can easily pick up strong seismic activity on the other side of the world.

“The Earth is a dynamic planet and susceptible to behaving in a more elastic fashion that one might think. An earthquake has the same effect on the Earth as a pebble does when dropped into a pool. The ripple effect of last week’s earthquakes in The Solomon Islands were also felt in Ireland, for example,” added Mr. Blake

The DIAS began modern seismic recordings in 1978. The Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) now features six permanent stations in Dublin, Kerry, Galway, Donegal and Wexford. 2013 marks 20 years since the beginning of digital seismic recording of the INSN. For more see www.dias.ie.

Over the next two years Irish skies are to be set ablaze with displays of the Northern Lights, some of which could knock out satellites and send power grids into overload plunging millions of people into darkness.

IMAGES - Pod Of Dolphins (Donegal) And Basking Shark (Clare)

The Irish Basking Shark Project research team was joined last week along the Donegal coast by a pod of approximately 50 dolphins.

On the morning of Friday (17th August), the dolphins were spotted in Lough Swilly. By evening they had travelled quite a distance to Malin Head and onwards.

While at the north end Lough Swilly, some of the Basking Shark research team got the chance to shoot some footage and film.

Meanwhile, a juvenile 4m long basking shark that was tagged by the IDP funded Monster Munch project on August 8th, just South of Lenan head in the Mouth of Lough Swilly, has been detected west of Loop Head in County Clare and the mouth of the Shannon Estuary.  The shark's present location is approximately 250 miles from where it was originally tagged 13 days ago in Inishowen waters.

According to the Irish Basking Shark Project: "The satellite tags which have been attached to five sharks adopted by coastal communities on Inishowen have proven sluggish to report their positions. This movement record and live feed is welcome news with luck other sharks will also report their positions on a regular basis in the coming days and weeks."
