Irish Seismometers Record North Korea Nuclear Test
Tuesday, February 12, 2013

<!--[if gte mso 9]> The energy from today's (Tuesday, 12 February 2013) underground nuclear test in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) was felt as far away as Ireland and recorded on seismometers in Dublin and Donegal, according to the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN). The seismometers picked up the "explosion-like" event approximately 11 minutes after North Korea detonated what it called a “miniaturised” nuclear device. Tom Blake, INSN Director explained that the explosion from the nuclear test propagated through the ground measuring 4.9 magnitude on the Richter Scale. Mr. Blake, who is also Head of the National Data Centre, Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation at the School of Cosmic Physics in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), explained: “The energy wave generated by North Korea’s nuclear test was clearly picked up by seismometers in north Donegal and the Dublin Mountains approximately 11 minutes after it occurred at 2:58 AM (GMT) on Tuesday. It was located roughly in the region of the previous North Korean nuclear tests of 2006 and 2009. The South Korean defence ministry has provided preliminary yield estimates for the test of between 6 to 7 kilotons. Our data suggests the test was a more powerful blast than North Korea's two previous tests.”
Mr. Blake said that seismometers are so sensitive that they can easily pick up strong seismic activity on the other side of the world. “The Earth is a dynamic planet and susceptible to behaving in a more elastic fashion that one might think. An earthquake has the same effect on the Earth as a pebble does when dropped into a pool. The ripple effect of last week’s earthquakes in The Solomon Islands were also felt in Ireland, for example,” added Mr. Blake The DIAS began modern seismic recordings in 1978. The Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) now features six permanent stations in Dublin, Kerry, Galway, Donegal and Wexford. 2013 marks 20 years since the beginning of digital seismic recording of the INSN. ADVANCE ALERT Heavy Rain/Strong Winds, Risk Of Flooding
Saturday, January 26, 2013
Atmosphere, Carlow, Cork, Down, Dublin, Environment, Flood, Ireland, Kerry, Limerick, News, Storm, Wicklow

Valid from – Friday, 25 Jan 2013, 12:00
Valid to – Saturday, 2 Feb 2013, 12:00
The cold spell has come to an end and has been replaced by an all too familiar sight. The Atlantic, which has been relatively sterile in recent weeks, is set to bring some extensive rainfall across Ireland during the coming week with no strong signals of a let-up during the first few days of February.

Ireland Snow Update - 6pm, Friday 18 January 2013
Friday, January 18, 2013
Atmosphere, Clare, Cold, Cork, Derry, Dublin, Ireland, Kerry, News, Wicklow
SNOW UPDATE FROM TMT'S PETER O'DONNELL:
Snow chances will increase steadily this evening for regions in the current snow areas of Ulster and north Leinster, and then north of a line stretching from Wicklow to Clare line through Saturday as colder temperatures develop. It is very difficult to say what areas will see good accumulations other than east facing slopes or any higher terrain in the zone prescribed above.
There is nothing too organized about the pattern but it has the look of a patchwork quilt of 1-5 cm accumulations with some areas seeing only trace amounts. Mixing issues (rain to snow or snow to rain) should gradually fade out except for onshore locations and locations at sea sea level. Even here the rate of fall will determine precipitation type i.e. the harder it comes down the more likely snow or at least heavy hail.
The most important detail is that 850 mb temps (upper air temperatures at approximately 1500m) are going to fall steadily towards about -7 C in the zone I have described. This is colder than currently in snow areas of Ulster, so that should be a very good sign for phase change. It will be a cold frosty night, with icy patches likely to form. Lowest temperatures of plus 2 to -2 C, or lower where there is lying snow.
South of the zone outlined above, snow chances are restricted to higher ground mostly above 300m until we see further advance of the upper level cold through Sunday. Then it becomes a question of where oncoming Atlantic moisture hits receptive upper level parameters and that would seem to be mid-Kerry. Places like Inch, Dingle and Valentia will likely not see rain turn over to snow, but Listowel to Cork should do so at least for part of Monday.
