WORLD FROM SPACE - Elwha River, Washington, USA


The Elwha River arises from headwaters in the Olympic Mountains and flows northward across Washington, emptying into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In the early twentieth century, Thomas Aldwell—a politician, banker, and entrepreneur—saw an opportunity in the river’s rapid waters and narrow gorges. He decided to harness the river’s energy and secured enough investment money to establish the Olympic Power Company.

Dudinka, in north central Siberia, lies deep within the Arctic Circle and is one of the northernmost towns in the world. With average annual temperatures of -15 °C (5°F) and six weeks of darkness in the winter, it is not a particularly inviting place to build a town.

Dust stirred in western China’s Taklimakan Desert at the beginning of August 2012. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image on August 2, 2012. It shows dust and clouds along the desert’s southern rim.
