Firefighters Contain Chips Blaze In California


The Chips fire was first reported in Plumas National Forest on July 29, 2012, burning about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Quincy, California. By September 5, it had charred more than 75,000 acres (300 square kilometers). Though parts of the fire were still smoldering on that date, fire officials considered the blaze 100 percent contained.  

Siberia Records First Snowfall Of Autumn/Winter 2012


Few things change the appearance of Earth’s land surfaces as readily as a layer of snow. As fall approaches in the Northern Hemisphere and spring does in the Southern Hemisphere, snow’s ability to transform the greens of vegetation and browns of rock and soil to white is on display.

WORLD FROM SPACE - Elwha River, Washington, USA


The Elwha River arises from headwaters in the Olympic Mountains and flows northward across Washington, emptying into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In the early twentieth century, Thomas Aldwell—a politician, banker, and entrepreneur—saw an opportunity in the river’s rapid waters and narrow gorges. He decided to harness the river’s energy and secured enough investment money to establish the Olympic Power Company.

WORLD FROM SPACE - Dudinka, Russia


Dudinka, in north central Siberia, lies deep within the Arctic Circle and is one of the northernmost towns in the world. With average annual temperatures of -15 °C (5°F) and six weeks of darkness in the winter, it is not a particularly inviting place to build a town.

Fires Continue To Spread Across Northern California


Hot, dry, and gusty conditions continued to exacerbate wildfires throughout the western United States on August 24, 2012. In northern California, one of the areas most severely affected, several fires burned. Most blazed in remote areas, but the Ponderosa fire had destroyed several dozen homes and threatened hundred of others.

Dust stirred in western China’s Taklimakan Desert at the beginning of August 2012. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image on August 2, 2012. It shows dust and clouds along the desert’s southern rim.

Mississippi River Levels Update

 


In the spring of 2011, the Mississippi River swelled to historic levels, rising out of its banks, rolling across a wide flood plain, and eating at flood barriers. The story in 2012 could not be more different: the river has reached record-low levels in places. 

Australian Wildfire Brought Under Control


On August 19, 2012, thick smoke streamed from a fire in Western Australia near Lake Gregory when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image.

Wildfire Breaks Out On Greek island Of Chios


In mid-August 2012, an intense wildfire broke out on the Greek island of Chios, sending a thick plume of smoke southward toward the island of Kriti (Crete).

The Azores Avoid Major Damage From Hurricane Gordon


Gordon formed as a tropical depression over the Atlantic Ocean on August 15, 2012, and strengthened to a tropical storm the next day.

Typhoon Tembin To Make Landfall In China And Taiwan


After four other Typhoons—Saola, Damrey, Haikui, and Kai-tak—made landfall in eastern China in just three weeks, Typhoon Tembin appeared ready to do the same. Tembin formed as a tropical depression over the western Pacific Ocean on August 19, 2012, and strengthened to a typhoon the next day.
