Sea Ice Max Continues Downward Trend


In September 2012, the ice cap over the Arctic Ocean shrank to its lowest extent on record, about half the size of the average summertime extent from 1979 to 2000. That sea ice minimum continued a long-term trend of diminishing ice cover over the past few decades.

Extensive Ice Fractures occurs in the Beaufort Sea


The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite captured this view of extensive sea-ice fracturing off the northern coast of Alaska. The event began in late-January and spread west toward Banks Island throughout February and March 2013.

Eyes to the skies as Comet PANSTARRS becomes visible during March

Luis Argerich from Buenos Aires, Argentina, captured Comet PANSTARRS in the sky above Mercedes, Argentina, on February 11, 2013. The comet shone at magnitude 4.5 to the left of an Iridium flare.

The long wait is nearly over. Northern Hemisphere skygazers haven’t seen a bright comet with a long tail since Comet Hale-Bopp graced the night sky in 1997. But if predictions hold, Comet PANSTARRS (C/2011 L4) should be a nice naked-eye object and look impressive through binoculars after sunset starting in the second week of March.

Northeastern USA Coastline in Sunglint


Looking out at the Earth’s surface from the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts frequently observe sunglint highlighting both ocean and inland water surfaces. The Atlantic Ocean—including Cape Cod Bay and Buzzards Bay, along the coastlines of Massachusetts and Rhode Island—has a burnished, mirror-like appearance in this image. This is due to sunlight reflected off the water surface back towards the astronaut-photographer. The peak reflection point is towards the right side of the image, lending the waters of Long Island Sound and the upper Massachusetts coastline an even brighter appearance.

WORLD FROM SPACE - Sea Ice In Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence


Every year, Arctic sea ice shrinks and grows, reaching its minimum in September and its maximum in February or March. As sea ice nears its maximum, it often begins to form in Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence. That's likely what was happening when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this natural-color image on February 11, 2013.

WORLD FROM SPACE - Snow-covered New England


A powerful winter storm left New Englanders digging out from heavy snow in early February 2013. According to unofficial totals released by the National Weather Service, snowfall totaled up to 33.5 inches (85 centimeters) in Connecticut, 31.0 inches (79 centimeters) in Massachusetts, and 30.4 inches (77 centimeters) in New Hampshire.

Serpentine Clouds And Ship Tracks Off North America


Serpentine cloud shapes snaked across the eastern Pacific Ocean in mid-January 2013. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image on January 15, 2013, showing an area off of the west coast of the United States and Canada. The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-West) also observed the ship tracks. The links above provide access to a high-resolution image and a brief movie made from GOES observations.

Amidst the natural marine clouds southwest of Vancouver Island were long, thin, manmade clouds, many of them arising from small source points. The thin clouds were ship tracks—clouds seeded by particles in ship exhaust. Tiny airborne particles (aerosols) act as nuclei or seeds for cloud formation, as water vapor condenses onto them.

The aerosol particles may be natural—such as desert dust or sea salt—or artificial, including the particles emitted by ships. The particles in ship exhaust are more abundant than natural airborne particles such as sea salt, so they generate more and smaller cloud droplets. Because of this, ship tracks tend to be brighter than other clouds. Water droplets are essentially tiny spheres, and a smaller sphere has a greater surface-to-volume ratio than a bigger sphere. In other words, a littler droplet has a greater surface area, relative to its volume, than a bigger droplet. The greater surface area means more sunlight reflected back into space.

So ships can have opposing effects. While the carbon dioxide from the combustion of fossil fuel that powers many ships warms Earth’s climate, the enhanced reflection of sunlight in ship tracks helps cool Earth’s climate.

Winter Storm To Hit Great Lakes (USA/Canada)


After a relatively mild and snow-free winter season, most of the Great Lakes region will be hit hard on Sunday by a developing combination of 4-8 inches of snow from a frontal system and 10 to 20 inches from strong west to northwest winds sweeping across the open waters of the Great Lakes.

Snow Cover Extent Declines in the Arctic

In the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, snow typically covers the land surface for nine months each year. The snow serves as a reservoir of water, and a reflector of the Sun’s energy, but recent decades have witnessed significant changes in snow cover extent. 

Studies of snow cover published in Geophysical Research Letters and the Arctic Report Card: Update for 2012 found that, between 1979 and 2012, June snow cover extent decreased by 17.6 percent per decade compared to the 1979–2000 average.

The maps on this page show June snow cover extent anomalies for every third year from 1967 through 2012. Each June’s snow cover is compared to the 1971–2000 mean. Above-average extent appears in shades of blue, and below-average extent appears in shades of orange. Toward the beginning of the series, above-average extents predominate. Toward the end of the series, below-average extents predominate.

The graph shows June snow cover in millions of square kilometers from 1967 through 2012, and the overall decline in snow cover is consistent with the changes shown in the maps. The graph and maps are based on data from the Rutgers University Global Snow Lab.

The snow-cover study authors, Chris Derksen and Ross Brown, found an overall decline in snow cover from 1967 through 2012, and also detected an acceleration of snow loss after the year 2003. Between June 2008 and June 2012, North America experienced three record-low snow cover extents. In Eurasia, each successive June from 2008 to 2012 set a new record for the lowest snow cover extent yet recorded for that month. 

Previous research identified a link between rising air temperatures and shrinking snow cover, so Derksen and Brown were not surprised to see an overall loss of snow, “But we were surprised at the continued broken records of June Arctic snow cover extent over the past five years,” says Brown. “Arctic spring snow cover typically fluctuates over cycles of about three to four years so you don’t expect to see sequences of decreasing snow cover persisting through these natural cycles.” 

As with sea ice, declining snow cover extent means decreasing albedo. The overall “whiteness” of an object determines how much sunlight it reflects back into space. Snow has very high albedo, reflecting up to 90 percent of the sunlight it receives. As snow cover declines, dark soils and vegetation absorb more of the Sun’s energy. The Geophysical Research Letters study pointed out that declining snow cover raises ground temperatures and increases the thickness of the active layer—the uppermost layer of permafrost that thaws each summer. When organic material in thawing permafrost decomposes, it can release methane, a potent greenhouse gas when released to the atmosphere.

Anticipating future changes in Arctic snow cover poses challenges for researchers. “Changes in fall snow cover are complicated because the longer open-water season provides additional moisture for increasing snowfall,” Brown says. “As for future snow cover, climate is strongly influenced by interannual variability over periods of five to ten years, so that time range is hard to predict. But global climate models show the rate of Arctic snow cover decline speeding up over the long term.”

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE - An 8-Year Journey Across The Atlantic

We have come across an interesting sideline story to the flooding which occurred at Passage East in County Waterford on Wednesday night. We received the below message from Aoife Millea, who shared numerous flooding images from Passage with us during the week.

According to Aoife: "the high tides in passage east the other day did bring something good ! my son is 9 and found a message in a bottle on the beach the following day. it was from 2 girls aged 12 from Montreal in Canada, they were on holidays in gaspesie (Quebec, Canada) when they threw the bottle in , in 2004 !! so 8 years later it arrived in passage east !!! he is chuffed to bits !"

The message in the bottle reads: " 06/2004 bonjour, nous sommes deux filles qui ont eu l'idee de lancer une bouteille a la mer . nous nous appelons charlaine and claudia. nous avons toutes les deux 12 ans et nous habitons a montreal. ces temps-ci nous sommes en vacances en gaspesie dans le village de grande-vallee. nous avons eu l'idee de lancer une bouteille parce que nous avons vu une emissions de jeunes qui lancaient une bouteille a la mer. si vous trouvez cette bouteille a la mer dites-nous quand ou et comment avez-vous trouve notre bouteille . dites nous aussi vortre nom age origine lieu de residence . Leslie Strengthens In The Atlantic


On August 30, 2012, Tropical Depression Twelve turned into Tropical Storm Leslie. The storm further strengthened into Hurricane Leslie days later. When the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over the system on August 31, it appeared as a fairly uniform mass of clouds. But to the CloudSat satellite, the picture was more complex. 

Hurricane Michael To Moves Toward Newfoundland

Tropical Depression Thirteen formed on September 3, 2012, strengthened into Tropical Storm Michael on September 4, and strengthened further into Hurricane Michael on September 5—the seventh Atlantic hurricane of the 2012 season. On September 7, 2012, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Michael packed maximum sustained winds of 105 miles (165 kilometers) per hour. The storm was located about 930 miles (1,495 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores.

On September 7, 2012, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured the below natural-color image of Hurricane Michael over the Atlantic Ocean.



About the time that MODIS acquired this image, the NHC reported that the storm was moving toward the northwest at roughly 3 miles (6 kilometers) per hour.

Storm track projections showed Michael continuing northward past the island of Newfoundland within the next several days.

Solar Flare Sparks Northern Lights Display


A curtain of green auroras ripples over hoodoo rock formations near Drumheller, Canada, early Monday, Labor Day in the U.S. The same night, similar shows enlivened skies over many high-latitude countries across the Northern Hemisphere.

Last Friday a solar flare exploded off the sun, launching a giant cloud of charged gas—a coronal mass ejection, or CME—toward Earth. About 48 hours after NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory had detected the eruption, the CME, travelling faster than a million miles an hour, slammed into Earth's magnetic field, sparking the auroras.

When a CME, or solar wind, enters the upper atmosphere, its charged particles smash into and break up gas molecules, which give off energy in the form of the so-called northern lights (or in the Southern Hemisphere, southern lights).

The colors a sky-watcher sees depend on the type of gas being hit and how high it is. For example, the green aurora pictured was the result of oxygen-atom collisions about 60 to 120 miles (100 to 200 kilometers) up.

Number Of Forecasted Atlantic Hurricanes Revised Upwards

In its updated tropical forecast for 2012, released today, WSI (Weather Services International) has increased the 2012 forecast to 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 intense hurricanes (category 3 or greater).
