Coldest start to March since 1995

Boreas, the Greek god of the North wind who certainly has made his presence felt over Ireland this March so far.

Broadly speaking, mean maximum temperatures for the first 19 days of this month are the lowest since 1995 in places, and as far back as 1979 in others; in terms of mean minima, March 2010 was actually colder for the same period - by around 1.0c. Overall however, this March is likely to finish the coldest since that of 1995.

In Claremorris, Co. Mayo, there has been an air frost (temp of -0.1c or less) recorded on each of the last 11 nights. This is the highest run of consecutive air frosts at this, and indeed, any other official synoptic station, since December 2010, which just happened to be one of the coldest months ever recorded in Ireland.
