Satellite image of the North Atlantic and European region taken at noon today. Note the expanse of showers to the NW of Ireland. These showers are created when cold, Polar air flows over the warmer waters of the N Atlantic. This creates instability in the atmosphere hence the development of these showery bands.

As these showers move down over Ireland later this evening and overnight they will turn increasingly wintry with the risk of hail and thunder in places with the possibility of some falls of snow, especially over higher ground but this cannot be ruled out at lower levels either. However, the showers will turn less wintry tomorrow. Winds strong and gusty throughout.
