On August 11th, 2012, at 12.23.18 and 12.34.36 UTC two large earthquakes of 6.4.and 6.3 struck Northwestern Iran approximately 10km apart. There has been severe damage with over 300 casualties and over 2000 injured as result of the earthquakes.
The earthquakes were analysed at Met Eireann's Seismic monitoring station at Valentia Observatory, Caherciveen, Co. Kerry.
The Seismology Station at Valentia is part of the Irish Seismic Network. From the analysis of the event the P wave took approximately 7 mins 41 seconds to reach the Met Eireann facility at 12.31.03 UTC with the S wave occurring at 12.37.19 UTC.
This part of Iran is an active Seismic zone. Over the past 40 years, seven earthquakes of Magnitude 6 or greater have occurred within 300 km of these events.
